Sham News Network (SNN)

30 July 2013

Sham News Network was established by a group of Syrian activists in March 2011. It stands out for its efficient use of social networking sites to document and broadcast the uprising.  It aims to bridge between the information provided by activists on the ground and international media, giving voice to and amplifying citizen media.  SNN activists work with international institutions to develop their role.

Since the beginning of the uprising, SNN has been on top of every news broadcasting list as a resource. Its work has become increasingly professional as it became one of the most visited sites, especially through its facebook page. The network works with international institutions to develop its role as an international news outlet and a major news resource.

The network defines itself as a “patriotic organization, established by Syrian activists in the very early stages of the Syrian revolution." Its current mission is to spread news related both to rebels' activities within the Syrian borders and to the crimes committed by the regime, in order to deliver them to the outside world.

The network includes press, video and picture sections. It has an English version and correspondents in different areas throughout Syria. They do live broadcasting, television reports and written reports.

The network believes in the importance of having a clear set of standards, especially given the difficulty of identifying material coming from Syria. Editors put effort into checking the credibility of every material they receive and providing a clear description and context for potential viewers.
