Magic Caravan

05 March 2014

The crisis in Syria is on the verge of completing its third year, and the enormity of the humanitarian disaster in the country has reached boiling limits. 6 million displaced inside and outside Syria, medical and educational infrastructure are on the brink of collapse and a worrying number of Syrian children haven't been to school for years. Civil activists alarmed by the situation, launched the Magic Caravan project, a group that specializes in entertaining and educating displaced children.

The project was named after the caravans that fill agriculture plantations in the city of Idlib and its surroundings, especially since caravans are a metaphor of displacement and instability. This colorful Magic Caravan is to be set up in areas that hold displaced Syrians, engaging children in a variety of activities, that aim to develop their mental capacity. Fine arts workshops that include drawing, painting and handicrafts, all relying on environment remnants, evening film screenings, and distribution of the Zayton & Zaytonah magazine, a biweekly magazine published by young Syrians who take interest in uplifting the emotional and mental status of children.

The team is collecting all the children's artifacts, in preparation for a future plan to display them in an open gallery. “We've collected artworks from nearly 200 kids we have worked with. We spent an average of 4 hours a day working with children of different ages,” one of the project's operators explains to Syrin Untold.

The group also paid great attention to schools located in areas that are no longer under Assad control, such as fine arts workshops that were held at the school of “Qassim al-Hammad” for three days, film screenings in schools and engaging children in sports activities.

What keeps us optimistic..” an activist says “is the fact that the education-vaccum in Syria has alarmed all Syrian parents, which makes them amazingly cooperative, because they realize the seriousness of the issue. Additionally, most displaced families are having financial hardships that prevent them from putting their children in decent schools, which is exactly what the Magic Caravan is trying to provide.”

The Magic Caravan is a team of volunteers that seek the expertise of certain activists in the field of Fine Arts and interactive theater from time to time. It is a group that attempts to reach out to Syrian children, to help them restore the childhood they lost amidst the raging war.
