Since all severe circumstances prey on the most vulnerable, Syrian children have endured the biggest burden of violence over the course of the last three years. The chemical attack of Ghouta in August 2013, was by far the most horrifying incident, taking the lives of an estimated 426 children.

After the massacre, activists of the humanist group "Olive Branch", have taken it upon themselves to advocate the Syrian children's right to live, and urge the world to save a whole generation from the horrid effects of violence. To this end, they launched a campaign called "We Were Born to Live". In August 24, 2013, activists of Olive Branch posted tens of pictures of young children holding banners, on the campaign's official Facebook page. Each banner had the sentence "We were born to live" in multiple languages, including: English, German, Russian and Kurdish.

The campaign held a simple, yet profoundly painful message, one that is better illustrated in the words of one of the campaign's founders: "If this madness carries on, the only childhood memories Syrian children will have, will be the names of missiles and weapons."
