Messages in Honor of Revolutionary Syrian Women

29 July 2013

Last March, the Local Coordination Committees of Syria dedicated a Friday to honoring revolutionary Syrian women. On that day, activists held protest signs bearing messages in support of women.

Activists wanted to celebrate and recognize the efforts of Syrian women on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which was the day before. They paid special attention to the important role women have played throughout the Syrian uprising.

LCC activists at protests across Syria held signs bearing the message: “The revolutionary Syrian woman is a reality, not a legend,” on March 9.

A number of coordination committees participated in the campaign. In Amuda, they held a sign that said, “The principles of freedom begin with the freedom of women.” Activists in the Salamia coordination committee wrote, “Women across the world celebrate Women’s Day, while women in Syria celebrate the martyrdom of their sons.” The coordination committees of Eastern Maliha, Sanamein, Qadmus, Inkhil, Hasaka, Al-Shahba and Jdedet Artuz took part as well.

The main goals of the campaign were to show loyalty to Syrian women, stress the important role they are playing in the revolution, to encourage them to continue in their efforts, and to assure female activists that their rights will be preserved in the future Syria.
