On December 9, 2013, masked gunmen stormed the Damascus Violations Documentation Center and kidnapped four of its members: Razan Zeitouneh, Samira Khalil, Wael Hamadeh and Nazem Hammadi. “Freedom Graffiti” is the latest campaign attempting to draw attention to the fact that the four human rights activists are still abducted, with no news of their whereabouts.

The campaign was launched by friends of the detainees, in collaboration with the The Day After organization in the governorate of Idlib in July, 2014. It was carried out by activists Alaa Mahmoud and Marwan al-Hameed, among others.

“Graffiti of the names and pictures of the four activists covered the walls of Saraqeb, Has and Kafranbel", one of the organizers said to SyriaUntold.

The campaign, funded by The Day After, aims to exert pressure on the kidnappers and remind Syrians of the importance of the detained activists.

Idlib, activists recognize, is filled with extremist armed groups, which some believe are behind the kidnapping of Razan Zeitouneh and her colleagues. This has put the lives of “Freedom Graffiti” activists in danger, and has posed great challenges in the face of the campaign.
